The Freedom of Opinion in Islam asks what freedom of expression actually means within an Islamic framework, and how that compares with the way the same question is settled in secular legal systems.
‘Abdus-Salam al-Basunai builds the Islamic position from its textual sources, then sets it against Western practice — quoting court judgments, ballot measures, legislation and survey data to show how contested ethical questions get resolved when the only reference point is majority opinion or individual autonomy. Debates in American law, including litigation over end-of-life legislation in several US states during the 1990s, are used as worked examples of what happens when a society legislates on moral questions without a fixed source of guidance.
The argument throughout is that freedom of opinion in Islam is real but bounded, and that those bounds come from revelation rather than shifting public sentiment.
