What Of Mice and Men is about

• George and Lennie, two friends who travel together looking for work in California.
• Lennie’s great physical strength and childlike mind, and George’s protective care for him.
• Their shared dream of owning a small piece of land of their own.
• Life on a ranch in the Salinas Valley and the people they meet there.
• The fragile line between dreams and the hard facts of poverty.

The title comes from a line by the Scottish poet Robert Burns about how the best plans can go wrong. The story builds steadily to an ending that many readers find heartbreaking, so it is best to go in without spoilers.

About the author, John Steinbeck

John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in 1902, and the valley he grew up in appears in many of his books. He wrote novels such as The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden, along with Of Mice and Men. He won the Pulitzer Prize for The Grapes of Wrath and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. He died in 1968.

Why Of Mice and Men is worth reading

Of Mice and Men is a masterclass in economy. In very few pages, Steinbeck builds characters you care about and a world you can see and smell. The dialogue feels natural, and the themes of loneliness, loyalty and powerlessness are still painfully relevant. It also raises quiet questions about how society treats people who are vulnerable. The language includes some harsh words from its period, which reflect the setting. It is often taught in schools because it opens up so much discussion in so few pages.

Who should read this book

• Students studying American literature or preparing for exams.
• Readers who want a short classic they can finish quickly.
• Anyone who appreciates stories about friendship and loyalty.
• Readers interested in the Depression era and migrant labour.
• Book lovers who enjoy novellas that hit hard.

How to get the most from this book

Read it once for the story and once for the details. Notice how Steinbeck introduces the setting at the beginning and returns to it at the end. Think about what each character wants, and what stands in the way. If you are studying it, keep notes on recurring images and on how George speaks about the dream. Discussing the ending with a friend is almost a must.

Why Of Mice and Men is so often taught

Part of the reason Of Mice and Men is on so many reading lists is its structure. Steinbeck arranges the story almost like a play, with a few settings and carefully timed entrances, and the dialogue carries most of the meaning. The opening and closing scenes mirror each other, which gives students plenty to analyse. Yet the novella never feels like a classroom exercise, because the feelings are real. Readers come away thinking about how society treats the lonely and the vulnerable, and about the gap between what people hope for and what their circumstances allow. For many, Of Mice and Men is the first book that taught them how much a short story can hold.
