Urdu Ki Lisani Tashkeel is a well-known Urdu work on linguistics by Professor Mirza Khalil Ahmad Beg, the Aligarh linguist who has written widely on the history and structure of the Urdu language. The title means “the linguistic formation of Urdu”, and Lisani Tashkeel is exactly what the book is about: how Urdu took shape as a language. It is a standard name on reading lists for students of Urdu language and literature, and a useful book for anyone in Kashmir or elsewhere preparing for higher studies in Urdu. For the publisher, edition, year and pages of the copy in stock, please message us on WhatsApp at 9906523492 for details of the copy in stock.
Mirza Khalil Ahmad Beg was born on 1 January 1945 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. He served as Professor and Head of the Department of Linguistics at Aligarh Muslim University and was also a visiting faculty member at Cornell University in the United States. His work covers Urdu linguistics, phonetics, semantics, stylistics and literary criticism, and he has written more than twenty books.
Among his other titles are:
The book appears by name on university reading lists. It is listed among the recommended books for the M.A. Urdu paper on the early history of Urdu language and literature at Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, and among the supplementary books for the Urdu Zaban-o-Adab course at Aliah University, Kolkata. It also appears in reference book lists for Urdu as an optional subject in civil services preparation. These lists show how widely teachers regard it as a reference on the formation of Urdu. Students should always check their own university’s syllabus to see how it fits their course.
Many students of Urdu read poetry and prose with great love but find the linguistic side of their course harder: questions about where Urdu came from, how its sounds and grammar developed, and how it relates to other languages of the subcontinent. A study of lisani tashkeel, the linguistic formation of the language, gives a student the scientific background behind these questions. It helps you move from memorising theories to understanding them, which is what good answers in university and competitive exams require.
A linguistics book rewards slow and active reading. Read one chapter at a time and write a short summary in your own words at the end of each. Make a separate glossary of technical terms in Urdu with their meanings, since linguistic terminology is often what students find hardest. Where the book discusses different views on the origin or growth of Urdu, draw a simple table comparing them. Read it alongside a general history of Urdu literature so that the linguistic and literary sides of your course support each other. Before exams, revise from your own summaries and glossary rather than rereading the whole book.
