The novel is built around the CIA and a conspiracy within it. At its heart is a powerful intelligence chief who begins acting on her own judgment, and a skilled operative who realises that the people he served may have turned against him. We will not give away how the story unfolds, because the pleasure of a thriller lies in its turns. What we can say is that the book is driven by suspense, shifting loyalties and a steady sense of pursuit.

About Jeffrey Archer

Jeffrey Archer is one of the best-known storytellers in English popular fiction. His first novel, Not A Penny More, Not A Penny Less, appeared in 1976, and he went on to write many bestselling novels and several collections of short stories. Readers know him for clear prose, short chapters and endings that often leave a surprise in store. The Eleventh Commandment shows this style at work in a global thriller setting.

Why this novel is worth your time

A thriller works best when it respects the reader’s time, and Archer’s habit of keeping chapters brisk makes this book easy to read in short sittings. It is a useful title for students who want to build reading speed in English, since the sentences are direct and the plot pulls you forward. It also gives a view of how popular fiction treats the world of intelligence agencies, which makes it interesting to readers who follow world affairs.

Who should read it

• Readers who enjoy espionage and political thrillers
• Fans of Jeffrey Archer who want to add another title to their shelf
• College and university students who want engaging English reading practice
• Anyone looking for a gift for a friend who loves page-turning fiction
• Book clubs and libraries in Srinagar and across Kashmir building a fiction section

Tips for reading a thriller well

Read it in a few long sessions rather than a page a day, so that the threads of the plot stay fresh in your mind. Keep a small note of the main characters and the places they move between, because the story covers several countries. If an English word is new, guess its meaning from the sentence first and check it afterwards, which is one of the best ways to widen your vocabulary through fiction. When you finish, think about what the book says about trust and responsibility; a good thriller leaves you with questions as well as thrills.

A note for gifting

The Eleventh Commandment makes a sensible present for a reader who likes crime and spy fiction. It sits well beside other Jeffrey Archer novels, and it is a book that is easy to lend, since friends will want to know how it ends.
