Stories of Repentance | Muhammad Abduh Mughawiri | Tawbah in Islam Book

About Stories of Repentance

Stories of Repentance is a collection of accounts of people who turned back to Allah and received His mercy, compiled by Muhammad Abduh Mughawiri and published by Darussalam, Riyadh. The Arabic title is Qisas at-Tawbah. The book reminds the reader that the door of repentance remains open.

Themes of the book

• The door of repentance stays open to everyone
• Repentance and its connection to blessing in this world
• Good deeds that wipe out earlier sins
• Examples from the lives of believers who returned to Allah

The idea of tawbah

Tawbah means returning to Allah with regret, leaving the sin, and resolving not to repeat it. The Qur’an calls on the believers to turn to Allah in repentance, and the Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah is pleased with the repentance of His servant. A story can bring this teaching to life in a way that an abstract lesson cannot.

About the compiler

The book names Muhammad Abduh Mughawiri as its author and compiler. We do not have reliable biographical details about him, so we have not included any here.

Who should read it

The book is for anyone who feels weighed down by past mistakes, for parents who wish to read to children, and for speakers and teachers looking for examples. It is gentle in tone and encourages hope.

Reading with care

Collections of stories draw on various sources, and not every narration in such books has the same strength. Readers who wish to quote a story in a talk should check its source with a scholar. The central message, that Allah forgives those who return to Him sincerely, is established in the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah.

Reading for hope

Many people carry a quiet burden of regret. A book that reminds the reader of Allah’s mercy can lift that weight and encourage a fresh start. Read a story at night, make a sincere prayer for forgiveness, and take a small step to correct what you can. Do not despair of the mercy of Allah.

Why stories of repentance touch the heart

People remember stories long after they forget lectures. An account of someone who slipped, regretted and returned to Allah shows that a believer is never beyond hope. The Qur’an itself uses the stories of earlier people to teach and to console, and Muslim preachers have always followed that example. Stories of Repentance continues this tradition in a simple, readable form, and its gentle tone makes it suitable for reading aloud at home.

How to read a book of repentance

Read a single story, then pause and reflect on your own life. Ask what small step you can take today: a missed prayer to make up, a person to apologise to, a bad habit to leave, or a debt to repay. Write the step down and begin that very day. The Prophet ﷺ said that every son of Adam makes mistakes and the best of those who err are those who repent often. Let that saying be a source of hope as you read.

A book for reading together

Families can read one story a night after Isha and discuss the lesson briefly. Mosque classes may use it as a short reading before a talk. Because each account is self-contained, nobody is lost if they miss a session. Teachers should remind listeners that the point of every story is the same: sincerity, regret and a firm decision to change.
