Selected Stories of Rabindranath Tagore

Selected Stories of Rabindranath Tagore

Regarded as the inventor of modern Bengali short stories, Rabindranath
Tagore has made an immense and laudable contribution to the Indian as well as World literature. Though a master of all the genres like prose, poetry and short-fiction, much of Tagore’s short stories attained popularity for their depiction of poignant human relationships in simple, uneventful situations. Set in the context of rural Bengali villages, and in the wider context of Indian culture, they ultimately establish Tagore’s ideals to bring a new world order based on transnational values and ideas.

This collection of short stories is fused with all the unique aspects of Tagore’s writings – social realism, traditionalism, universality, supernatural elements, belief in God, ideologies, fantasies and so on. Stories like ‘The Postmaster,’ ‘The Kabuliwallah,’ and ‘Vision’ portray the struggles of women and girls in traditional Indian society, ‘The Hungry Stones’ contains supernatural and grotesque elements, while ‘The Kingdom of Cards’ is a satirical fantasy. With its excellent blend of all literary qualities of Tagore’s works, this book will, no doubt, make an interesting read for people of all ages.
