What Kashmir in Conflict covers

• The history of the Valley as an independent kingdom
• The nineteenth-century origins of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, including the arrangements of 1846 under which the Valley came under a Hindu ruler
• Tensions between communities in the twentieth century
• The position of Kashmir in the relationship between India and Pakistan
• The strategic importance of the region and the way it became a major flashpoint with implications for wider stability

The author’s approach

Victoria Schofield draws on research carried out in both India and Pakistan, together with historical documents, to put together her account. Because she has looked at material from more than one side of the border, the book is often read as an introduction for those who are new to the subject. Readers who want more detail can follow it with specialised studies of particular periods or events.

Why this book matters

Few regions are discussed as often as Kashmir, and few are understood as little. News reports give only a snapshot. A book-length history shows how the present grew out of earlier arrangements, decisions and events. Reading it helps a student, a journalist or a concerned citizen to follow current discussion with more context. It also encourages a habit that every reader of history needs: separating what is documented from what is argued, and comparing different accounts.

Who should read Kashmir in Conflict

• Students of history, international relations and political science
• Readers who want a single, accessible overview of the Kashmir question
• Candidates and researchers who need a general background reference
• Teachers and librarians building a Kashmir studies collection
• Anyone in Kashmir or elsewhere who wants to read a published account of the region’s modern history

How to read a book on a disputed subject

Read with an open mind and a notebook. Mark the dates, the names of the main actors and the documents cited. When the author describes a viewpoint, note whose viewpoint it is. Afterwards, read at least one more book on the same period, preferably by an author with a different background, and compare. This simple method turns reading into study and protects you from relying on a single narrative. Nothing in this book or on this page is intended as legal or political advice.
