What Honour Among Thieves is about

The story is set in the years after the Gulf War of 1991. A powerful leader plans to humiliate the United States by taking the Declaration of Independence and destroying it in public on the Fourth of July. To carry out the plan, a New York lawyer with underworld connections is hired for an enormous fee. On the other side, an intelligence agent with a personal grudge and a university professor recruited by the CIA find themselves working together. The setting includes New York and other cities, and the countdown to Independence Day gives the book its tension. To keep the surprises intact, we have not revealed how the story ends.

Themes in the novel

• Revenge, pride and personal vendettas
• The symbolic power of a national document
• Unlikely alliances between rivals and partners who do not fully trust each other
• Espionage and the clash between governments and criminals
• The question that gives the title its irony, namely who can really be trusted
