This book examines the process of urbanization in Srinagar during 1846-1947. Based on a critical study of a rich variety of sources, it provides a coherent, systematic, historical investigation of the transition of Srinagar from medieval to modern under the impact of Western education. Besides an objective analysis of the economic, demographic, social, political, cultural and physical development of Srinagar, the book contains a useful discussion on natural calamities and disease, social conflict, the relationships between the city and the surrounding countryside, leisure and consumption, local civic institutions and identities, and municipal and state responsibilities.
A fresh prefatory note aimed at devising strategies for Srinagars future development adds an abiding value to this fourth edition of the book whose first copy came off the press in 1978.
