Al-Fawaid: A Collection of Wise Sayings is the English edition of al-Fawa’id, one of the best-loved works of Imam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (RH). The book gathers short reflections, wise sayings, life lessons and sincere advice that the Imam wrote down over the years, and it has become a favourite of readers who want classical guidance for the heart in a form they can read a page at a time. For the publisher, translator and page count of the copy in stock, please message us on WhatsApp at 9906523492.
Unlike most books, al-Fawaid is not arranged into chapters or themes. Ibn Qayyim (RH) recorded each benefit as it came to him, including lessons drawn from his own life, so the reader moves from one insight to the next much as one would turn the pages of a scholar’s private notebook.
Shamsuddin Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr, known as Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, was born in Damascus in 1292 CE and passed away there in 1350 CE. He studied for many years with Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (RH) and remained close to him until his teacher’s death. He wrote a large number of works, among them Zad al-Ma’ad, Madarij as-Salikin and at-Tibb an-Nabawi. What sets his writing apart is the way he joins sound knowledge with deep concern for the state of the heart. He writes about sin and repentance, love and fear of Allah, and the struggle with the self in a voice that is direct, warm and often unforgettable.
Because the book has no fixed order, it can be opened anywhere. A reader may pick it up for five minutes after Fajr or before sleeping and still come away with something to think about for the whole day. Many of the reflections are only a paragraph or two long, yet they carry the weight of a full lecture. Readers often say that a single line from al-Fawaid stayed with them for years. The book is also a gentle introduction to Ibn Qayyim (RH) for anyone who has heard his name but has not yet read his longer works.
The wise sayings in this book speak to problems that have not changed with time: a heart that has grown hard, a soul distracted by the world, a believer who keeps falling into the same sin, a person who has lost hope. Ibn Qayyim (RH) answers these with reminders of Allah’s mercy, the shortness of this life and the reality of the Hereafter.
Read slowly and only a little at a time. Al-Fawaid is a book for reflection rather than speed. After each passage, pause and ask what it asks of you: a sin to leave, a habit to build, a prayer to offer with more presence of heart. Keep a small notebook and copy out the lines that move you; returning to them later is one of the best ways to make them part of your life. Reading the book with a friend or family member and discussing one benefit a week can also help the lessons settle. Where a passage is difficult, mark it and ask a trusted teacher. Throughout, ask Allah Almighty for sincerity and understanding, and send salawat upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
A book of wise sayings by a great scholar makes a meaningful gift for Ramadan, Eid, a wedding or a friend who has started to practise more seriously. It is easy to carry, easy to dip into, and it rewards a lifetime of rereading.
