About Ten Principles Concerning Purification of the Soul

Ten Principles Concerning Purification of the Soul is a short book by Shaykh Abdur-Razzaq ibn Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbad al-Badr on tazkiyah, the purification of the soul. It runs to about 50 pages and presents the subject through ten principles drawn from the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

Tazkiyah is among the great aims of the message of the Prophet ﷺ, and this book gives readers a compact and practical way into it.

What the book covers

  • The meaning and importance of purifying the soul
  • Ten guiding principles taken from the Qur’an and the Sunnah
  • Qualities such as sincerity, humility, patience and gratitude
  • Reliance on Allah as a foundation for a clean heart

About the author

Shaykh Abdur-Razzaq ibn Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbad al-Badr was born in 1963 in Az-Zulfi, Saudi Arabia. He is the son of the hadith scholar Shaykh Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbad. He lectures at the Islamic University of Madinah and teaches at Masjid an-Nabawi, and he holds a PhD in ‘Aqeedah. His other works available in English include Asbab Ziyadat al-Iman, Fiqh of Du’a and Adhkar, Explanation of the Six Principles and Raising Children in Islam. Readers should take care not to confuse him with his father, who shares part of his name.

Why purification of the soul matters

Allah says in the Qur’an that the one who purifies his soul has succeeded and the one who corrupts it has failed. Many of us spend years improving our work, our homes and our appearance while giving little time to the state of the heart. Pride, show, envy and heedlessness can grow quietly if they are not checked. A book that focuses on the principles of tazkiyah gives the reader a way to look inward with honesty and to begin the slow work of repair.

Who should read it

This book suits students, young people, parents, teachers and anyone who wants to improve their character and their relationship with Allah. It is brief and direct, so it is a good choice for readers who are new to the subject. It can also serve as the basis for a short course or a weekly circle.

How to benefit from it

Take one principle at a time and give it a week. Read the section slowly, write down how it applies to you and choose one small practice. If the lesson is sincerity, check your intention before an act of worship. If it is humility, look for a chance to serve someone quietly. If it is gratitude, name the blessings you have received each evening. Review your notes after a month, ask Allah for help and do not lose hope if progress is slow, since purification of the soul is a lifelong task.

A companion for daily reflection

The principles in this book are easy to carry in the mind. Reading a page after Fajr or before sleep keeps the subject fresh, and talking about it with a friend or family member makes it easier to practise. Purification of the soul is not a matter of reading alone; it is shown in how we speak, how we treat others and how we respond to hardship and to ease.

A note and a gift

This short book makes a sincere gift for a friend, a student or a family member who wants to grow in faith. It also suits a Ramadan reading list, since the month is a natural time for working on the heart.
