About Man’s Search for Meaning

Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl is one of the most widely read books of the twentieth century, and anyone who wants to understand the human Search for Meaning in times of pain will find it a rewarding read. Written by a Viennese psychiatrist who survived three years in Nazi concentration camps, including Auschwitz, it combines a personal account of camp life with a short, clear introduction to the method of psychotherapy he developed, known as logotherapy. Our listing is the paperback in English. Please message us on WhatsApp at 9906523492 for details of the copy in stock, such as the number of pages.

What the book covers

The book is arranged in two main parts, followed by a postscript. The first part, often titled Experiences in a Concentration Camp, describes how prisoners lived and how their minds responded to hunger, cold, fear and loss. Frankl does not write it as a list of events. He observes, as a trained doctor of the mind, how people reacted and why some kept their inner dignity while others sank into apathy. The second part, Logotherapy in a Nutshell, explains in plain language the idea that the deepest drive of a person is the will to find meaning. The closing postscript restates his convictions.

  • A first-hand account of life in the camps, told with restraint rather than sensation
  • The idea that people can choose their attitude even when they cannot choose their circumstances
  • Three sources of meaning: meaningful work, love for another person, and the way we face unavoidable suffering
  • Responsibility towards the people and tasks that only you can fulfil
  • What Frankl calls tragic optimism: hope that stays honest about pain, guilt and death

The author, Viktor E. Frankl

Viktor Frankl was a neurologist and psychiatrist from Vienna. After the war he returned to his profession and spent the rest of his life teaching and writing about meaning. He died in 1997. The book first appeared in German in 1946, under a title that means roughly A Psychologist Experiences the Concentration Camp. An early English edition was translated by Ilse Lasch, and the book has since been translated into dozens of languages. It was reported to have sold over ten million copies by the time of the author’s death, and a 1991 survey by the Library of Congress and the Book-of-the-Month Club placed it among the ten most influential books in the United States.

Why this Search for Meaning still matters

People pick up this book at very different moments: after a loss, during illness, when a job ends, or simply when life feels empty. Frankl does not offer easy comfort. He argues that suffering by itself is not noble, but that a person who can find a reason to carry on is able to bear a great deal. For students in Kashmir and across India who face exam stress, uncertainty about the future or personal hardship, the book offers a calm and practical way of looking at difficulty. Many readers also find that it deepens their patience and gratitude, values that every faith and culture respects.

Who should read it

  • Students and teachers of psychology, philosophy, literature and social sciences
  • Readers looking for a short, powerful non-fiction title in English
  • Anyone going through a hard season who wants perspective rather than slogans
  • Counsellors, doctors, teachers and parents who support others
  • Book clubs and reading circles that enjoy discussion books

How to get the most from this book

Read the first part slowly, since it deals with painful events. Keep a notebook and write down one idea from each sitting. After finishing the second part, ask yourself three questions: what work is mine to do, whom do I love and serve, and how will I face what I cannot change? Revisit the book after a few months, as its meaning often deepens with the reader’s own experience. Note that the book contains accounts of suffering and death in the camps, so it is best suited to mature readers.
