About Step Ahead With English for UG Students

Step Ahead With English For UG Students (NEP 2020) is an English book for undergraduate students studying under the four-year programme structure introduced through the National Education Policy 2020. If your college has asked you to buy Step Ahead With English for your English language course, this is the copy we stock at Lafz Bookstore in Srinagar. For the publisher, editors, edition year and page count, please message us on WhatsApp at 9906523492 for details of the copy in stock.

English is a compulsory part of most undergraduate programmes under NEP 2020, whatever your main subject is. Students of arts, science, commerce and other streams all sit in the same English language class, so a clear, well organised textbook makes a real difference across the first semesters of college.

Why English matters in the NEP 2020 undergraduate structure

NEP 2020 changed the way undergraduate degrees are built in India. Besides the major and minor subjects, students now take shorter language and skill courses. In Kashmir, for example, the University of Kashmir lists English Language as a common language course for Semesters I to III in its NEP undergraduate syllabus, carrying three credits and combining literature with practical language work. The exact course name, units and prescribed text vary from university to university, so always check the syllabus your own college follows.

A language course like this usually aims at two things at once: reading short literary pieces, such as poems and short stories, with understanding, and using English correctly in daily writing. Students are asked to read passages and answer questions, write paragraphs and essays, and work on vocabulary, spelling and usage.

Skills you build with Step Ahead With English

• Reading carefully and answering comprehension questions in your own words
• Writing organised paragraphs and short essays with a clear main idea
• Building vocabulary through idioms, phrases and word usage
• Avoiding common spelling mistakes and confusing word pairs
• Responding to poems and short stories in a thoughtful, structured way

These are general goals of an undergraduate English language course. For the exact chapters and exercises inside the copy we have in stock, please message us on WhatsApp at 9906523492 for details of the copy in stock.

Who should buy this book

• First-year undergraduate students whose college has prescribed Step Ahead With English
• Students of any stream taking a compulsory English language or ability enhancement course under NEP 2020
• Students who want extra practice in reading and writing English before semester exams
• Parents buying course books for a son or daughter starting college in Srinagar or elsewhere in Kashmir
• Teachers who want a copy of the class text for reference

How to get the most from Step Ahead With English

Read each piece before it is taught in class, even if only once, and underline words you do not know. After the lecture, read it again and try the exercises yourself before you look at any notes. For writing practice, set a timer and write one paragraph a day on a simple topic, then check it for spelling, punctuation and sentence length. Keep a small notebook for new words, idioms and phrasal verbs, and use each new word in a sentence of your own.

When exams approach, go back to the exercises you found hardest. Practise comprehension on unseen passages as well, because a good reader can handle any passage, not only the ones in the textbook. Ask your teacher about the question pattern your university uses and practise answers of the right length.
