Starting out from the year 1648, when the Portuguese explorers first arrived in Calicut, the first part of the book is devoted to the arrival and establishing of European colonies in India. Second part of the book starts from the revolt in 1857 and how the freedom struggle shaped up over the decades. The emergence of the reform movement and how it affected the economic and social condition of India in that age has also been narrated. The whole sequence of events and how they collectively led to Independence in 1947 is part of this section in the book.
The book is especially helpful for students who are planning to appear for competitive examinations, especially the Civil Services Examination where a lot of knowledge abut modern India is essential for answering many questions.
