About A Piece of Advice and Admonition for the Women

A Piece of Advice and Admonition for the Women is a book of counsel addressed directly to Muslim women by Shaykh Abdur-Razzaq ibn Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbad al-Badr. It is published in English by Hikmah Publications, in 2014, and runs to about 127 pages.

The book follows the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, who addressed women directly with reminders and encouraged them to give charity. It is written in a warm and sincere tone.

What the book covers

  • Counsel addressed to women in the manner of the Prophet’s ﷺ own reminders
  • Encouragement to give charity
  • The value of knowledge and faith
  • Obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ
  • Modest conduct and good character

About the author

Shaykh Abdur-Razzaq ibn Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbad al-Badr was born in 1963 in Az-Zulfi, Saudi Arabia. He is the son of the hadith scholar Shaykh Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbad. He lectures at the Islamic University of Madinah and teaches at Masjid an-Nabawi, and he holds a PhD in ‘Aqeedah. His other works available in English include Asbab Ziyadat al-Iman, Fiqh of Du’a and Adhkar, Explanation of the Six Principles and Raising Children in Islam. Readers should take care not to confuse him with his father, who shares part of his name.

Why this book matters

The Prophet ﷺ did not leave women out of his teaching. He gave them reminders, answered their questions and urged them to be generous. Women today are surrounded by many voices that tell them what to value, and a sincere reminder rooted in the Qur’an and Sunnah can help to restore balance. A book of this kind speaks to the reader as a believer with a heart and a mind, and invites her to strengthen her faith, her knowledge and her character.

Who should read it

The book is meant for Muslim women of every age: students, mothers, working women and older readers. It is also useful for teachers who lead women’s classes, for sisters’ circles and for family members who wish to give a thoughtful gift. Men who wish to understand the counsel given to women in Islam may also find it informative.

How to benefit from it

Read it in small portions, perhaps a few pages after Fajr or in a quiet hour of the evening. Underline passages that move you, and write down one action to take after each reading. This could be an increase in charity, a fixed time for study, an effort to improve your prayer or a change in the way you speak at home. A study circle may read a section together each week and then share what each person has learned. Keep the book on a shelf where you can return to it.

Charity, knowledge and faith

The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have reminded women to give charity, and the women responded by giving what they had. This example shows that generosity does not depend on wealth, since each person gives according to her means. Knowledge too is a gift to be sought and shared, and faith grows when it is nourished by learning and good deeds. These themes sit at the heart of the book and make it a source of steady encouragement.

A gift to share

With its calm tone and clear purpose, this book makes a suitable gift for a sister, a daughter, a friend or a bride. Families sometimes give it together with a book on the lives of the women Companions, so that the reader has both counsel and examples to follow. It also fits well in the library of a women’s study group or an Islamic school.
