About The Three Fundamentals

The Three Fundamentals, Four Precepts & Conditions of Prayer is a short, foundational book by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab (RH), published in English by the International Islamic Publishing House (IIPH). The three fundamentals are the basic matters every Muslim needs to know: knowing his Lord, knowing his religion and knowing his Prophet ﷺ. This compact paperback, listed at about 57 pages, gathers these essentials in a form that a student, a teacher or a new Muslim can study with ease.

The title also includes the Four Precepts and the Conditions of Prayer, which are shorter texts by the same author on belief and worship. For the translator and the exact printing of the copy in stock, please message us on WhatsApp at 9906523492 for details of the copy in stock.

What the three fundamentals cover

  • Four matters that every Muslim must learn: knowledge, acting upon it, calling others to it and patience in the face of difficulty
  • Knowing Allah, the Lord who created and sustains everything and is alone worthy of worship
  • Knowing the religion of Islam, understood through its levels: Islam, Iman and Ihsan
  • Knowing Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his mission, his call to tawhid and his place as the final messenger
  • Proofs from the Qur’an throughout, so that belief rests on revelation and not on opinion

About Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab (RH)

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab was born in 1703 CE in Uyaynah in Najd and passed away in 1792 CE in Diriyah. He first studied with his father, learning the Qur’an and Hanbali fiqh, and later travelled for knowledge to Madinah, Basra, Baghdad and Damascus. His best-known major work is Kitab at-Tawhid, the Book of Monotheism. He also wrote short, accessible texts of principles and issues so that ordinary readers could learn the foundations of their faith. The Three Fundamentals is among these shorter works and has long been used as a first text in the study of creed.

Why the three fundamentals matter

A person can pray, fast and give charity for many years and yet never sit down to ask what the basis of all this is. The three fundamentals bring the reader back to first things. Who is my Lord? What is my religion? Who is my Prophet ﷺ? When these three answers are clear and supported by evidence, the believer’s practice has a firm foundation. The book is therefore studied in many circles as an introduction to tawhid before larger texts are taken up.

The four matters at the opening of the text are equally important. They remind us that knowledge is not the end of the road. It must be followed by action, by calling others with wisdom and by patience when the path becomes difficult. In this way the book teaches a complete cycle for the life of a Muslim.

Who should read this book

  • Students beginning the study of creed who want a short, classical text
  • New Muslims looking for clear basics with evidence
  • Teachers and imams who explain the text in classes or halaqahs
  • Families who wish to revise the essentials of belief together
  • Libraries of schools, madrasas and mosques

How to study the three fundamentals

Take one section at a time. Read the question, read the answer and look carefully at the verse quoted as evidence. Then try to say the answer in your own words without looking. Many students memorise the questions and answers, and this is a good way to keep them in the heart. If possible, study the text with a qualified teacher so that you receive the explanation that has been passed down. Review a little each week, and teach what you have learned to your children or your friends, since teaching is one of the best ways to fix knowledge in the mind.

The four precepts and the conditions of prayer

Alongside the three fundamentals, this edition includes the Four Precepts and the Conditions of Prayer. Together the texts move from belief to practice: first the foundations of what we believe about Allah, the religion and the Prophet ﷺ, then the matters that make our worship sound. Having them in one small book makes it easy to carry, to use in a class and to revisit before and after Ramadan, Hajj or any season of renewed effort.
