Aqeedah Islami

About Aqeedah Islami

Aqeedah Islami is a book on Islamic creed, the foundation on which every other part of a Muslim’s faith is built. The word aqeedah comes from an Arabic root meaning to tie or bind firmly, and it refers to the beliefs that a believer ties his heart to: belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day and divine decree. If you are looking for a book to understand what a Muslim believes and why, a title on Aqeedah Islami is the right place to begin. Correct belief comes before action. A person may pray, fast and give charity, but these acts rest on a sound understanding of who Allah is, who the Prophet ﷺ is and what the purpose of life is. That is why scholars of every age have given creed the first place in their teaching.

The six pillars of faith

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explained faith (iman) in the well-known hadith of Jibril (AS), reported in Sahih Muslim, where he listed six articles. Any study of Aqeedah Islami revolves around these:

• Belief in Allah, His oneness in lordship, in worship and in His names and attributes
• Belief in the angels, who obey Allah and carry out His commands
• Belief in the revealed books, including the Torah, the Injil, the Zabur and finally the Qur’an
• Belief in the messengers, from Adam (AS) to the final messenger Muhammad ﷺ
• Belief in the Last Day, including the grave, resurrection, reckoning, Paradise and Hellfire
• Belief in divine decree, both its good and its bitter side

Why Aqeedah Islami deserves careful study

Every prophet came with the same basic call: worship Allah alone and avoid false objects of worship. Allah Almighty says in the Qur’an that He sent to every nation a messenger with this message. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ spent thirteen years in Makkah calling people to correct belief before most of the detailed rules of law were revealed. This shows how central Aqeedah Islami is to the whole religion. A reader who knows the basics of creed is better protected against doubt, against superstition and against practices that have no basis in the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

Creed is also a source of peace. A believer who knows that everything happens by the knowledge and will of Allah, and that Allah is Most Merciful and All-Wise, faces loss, illness and delay with patience. A believer who knows that he will return to Allah and be asked about his deeds lives with more care towards others. These are the practical fruits that a good book on creed tries to build.

How to benefit from the book

Read one topic at a time and reflect on it before moving on. Look up every verse and hadith that is quoted, and read it in context. Discuss what you learn with family members so that it stays in the mind. If a question arises that the book does not answer, take it to a trusted and well-grounded scholar instead of searching randomly online. Make dua to Allah to keep you firm on the straight path, as the Prophet ﷺ often did, and send salawat upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ whenever his name is mentioned.

A book for the home library

A reliable book on Aqeedah Islami belongs in every Muslim home. It can be read by an adult in a few weeks, or read aloud in small portions to the family after Maghrib or Fajr. It is also a useful reference to return to when a question about belief comes up in conversation. Because it speaks about the most basic matters of faith, it makes a thoughtful gift for a student, a new Muslim or a family member who is beginning to study Islam seriously.
