About Kashmir Under The Sultans

Kashmir Under The Sultans is a history of the Kashmir Valley during the Sultanate period, written by the historian Mohibbul Hasan. If you are looking for a serious, well-organised study of how the Valley was governed and how its society and culture developed in the centuries of Sultanate rule, Kashmir Under The Sultans is a title that history students and general readers alike keep returning to. The book covers the period from the establishment of the Sultanate in Kashmir up to the Mughal emperor Akbar’s conquest of the region. It is a work of history rather than of opinion, and it is best read the way a student reads a reference text: slowly, with a notebook, and with an eye on how one period leads into the next.

What Kashmir Under The Sultans covers

• The rise of the Sultanate in Kashmir and how it was established
• Sultanate administration and the way the state was run
• Social and economic structures of the Valley in this period
• Artistic and cultural developments, including the standard of culture that Kashmir reached under the Sultans
• The loss of independence at the end of the period and its effect on cultural life, including the departure of many learned people from the Valley

About the author, Mohibbul Hasan

Mohibbul Hasan is the author of this study. He is known as a historian of South Asia, and this book is one of his best-known works on the history of Kashmir. As always, the views and interpretations in the book are the author’s own, based on his reading of the sources available to him. A reader who wants to compare perspectives can place this book beside more recent studies of Kashmir’s past.

Why this history matters

Many people meet Kashmir only through present-day news. A book on the Sultanate period reminds readers that the Valley has a long and rich history of its own, with a distinct administrative, social and cultural life. Understanding that background helps a reader approach later periods with better context. For those who study history, political science, culture or literature, a clear account of the Sultanate period is a basic building block.

The book is also useful for anyone interested in the cultural life of the Valley: its learning, its arts and crafts, its institutions and the way different communities lived together. A study that gives space to administration, society, economy and the arts together lets the reader see a whole society rather than only its rulers.

How to get the most from the book

Start by reading the table of contents so that you know how the chapters are arranged. Make a simple timeline in your notebook and add the main developments as you read. Note down the terms used for offices and institutions, since these help in understanding administration. Compare what the author says about society and economy with what you know from other sources, and keep a list of questions to explore further. If you are using the book for examination preparation, write short summaries of each chapter in your own words.
