About the Micro-Teaching Activity Book

The Micro-Teaching Activity Book by Dr. M. I. Mattoo is a practical workbook for student-teachers. It was first brought out in Srinagar in 2006 for B.Ed and M.Ed students, and it remains a familiar companion for trainee teachers in Kashmir who have to plan, practise and record their micro-teaching lessons as part of their teacher education course. This teaching activity book gives student-teachers a structured place to prepare each skill lesson and to reflect on how it went.

What is micro-teaching?

Micro-teaching is a method of teacher training developed in the 1960s by Dwight W. Allen and his colleagues in the Teacher Education Program at Stanford University. Instead of teaching a full class for a full period, the trainee teaches a very short lesson, usually just a few minutes long, to a small group of peers or pupils, and focuses on one teaching skill at a time. The lesson is observed, feedback is given, and the trainee then plans and teaches the lesson again with improvements. This cycle of planning, teaching, feedback, re-planning and re-teaching allows a new teacher to master each skill in a safe and controlled setting before facing a real classroom.

Skills practised in micro-teaching

Teacher education programmes commonly train student-teachers in skills such as:

  • Introducing a lesson and creating interest at the start
  • Questioning, including fluent questioning and probing questions
  • Explaining a concept clearly and logically
  • Illustrating with examples
  • Stimulus variation, using movement, voice and gestures to hold attention
  • Reinforcement, encouraging and rewarding pupil responses
  • Using the blackboard effectively
  • Closing a lesson and summarising what has been learnt

The exact skills required in your course depend on your college and university, so follow the list given by your teacher educators.

Why a teaching activity book helps

During the practical part of a B.Ed course, student-teachers have to plan many short lessons, keep records of them and show their work to supervisors. A dedicated teaching activity book keeps all of this in one organised place. It helps the trainee think through each lesson in advance, keep track of the feedback received and see their own progress from the first attempt to the re-teach. A neat, complete record also makes a good impression when practical files are checked.

Who should use this book

  • B.Ed students preparing for micro-teaching sessions and practicals
  • M.Ed and diploma in education students who study or supervise micro-teaching
  • Teacher educators who guide trainees through the micro-teaching cycle
  • New teachers in schools across Kashmir who want to strengthen their classroom skills

How to get the most from your micro-teaching practice

Choose a small, clear topic for each skill lesson so that you can focus on the skill rather than on covering content. Write your plan before the session, rehearse it once and keep an eye on the clock, since micro lessons are very short. Ask your peers and supervisor for honest feedback and note it down straight away. When you re-teach, change one or two things at a time and observe the difference. Over a few cycles you will see real growth in confidence, and the habits you build now will serve you throughout your teaching career.
