Who was Tipu Sultan?

According to standard historical references, Tipu Sultan was born in 1751 at Devanahalli near Bangalore and died on 4 May 1799 at Srirangapatna, then known as Seringapatam. His father, Hyder Ali, had become the de facto ruler of Mysore in 1761. Tipu took the throne in 1782 after his father died during the Second Anglo-Mysore War and ruled until his death in 1799. He fought beside his father in the First Anglo-Mysore War at the age of fifteen, and he is associated with the Battle of Pollilur in 1780 and with the Treaty of Mangalore in 1784.

His place in history

The Third Anglo-Mysore War ended with the Treaty of Seringapatam in 1792, under which Mysore lost a great deal of territory. In the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799, a British-led force supported by the Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad besieged Srirangapatna, and Tipu was killed defending his capital. He was buried beside his father at the Gumbaz. Historians also credit him with expanding the use of iron-cased rockets, with new coinage and a new calendar, with encouraging the silk industry and with building roads and planning a navy. Readers and historians still debate many details of his life, which is exactly why a dedicated biography is worth reading.

Why read a biography in Urdu?

  • Urdu has a long tradition of historical and biographical writing about South Asian rulers
  • Reading in the language of your home makes history easier to follow and enjoy
  • A hardback biography is a lasting addition to a family or school library
  • It lets younger readers learn about a major figure of Indian history in a familiar language

How to get the most from a historical biography

Read with a timeline beside you. Note the dates of the major wars and treaties, and keep a simple map of Mysore, Malabar, Mangalore and Srirangapatna in mind. After each chapter, write two or three lines in your own words about what you learned. When you meet a claim that surprises you, compare it with another reliable book, because history is understood best when several sources are read side by side.

It also helps to separate what is firmly recorded, such as dates, treaties and battles, from interpretation and opinion. A thoughtful reader respects both the achievements and the debates about a historical figure, and avoids exaggeration in either direction.

Who should read this book

  • Readers who enjoy Urdu history and biography
  • Students of Indian history who want an Urdu-language book on Mysore and the Anglo-Mysore wars
  • Teachers and parents looking for a worthwhile gift for a history lover
  • Book lovers in Srinagar and across Kashmir who like to build a personal library
