Sharah Arbaeen Nawawi is an Urdu commentary by Prof. Syed Mujtaba Syedi on the famous collection of forty hadith gathered by Imam Nawawi (RH). Each hadith of the collection is taken up in turn, and the lessons and rulings contained in it are explained in Urdu so that an ordinary reader can follow and apply them. This hardback is published by Darul Ilm, and the book presents the hadith in Arabic with Urdu explanation. For the number of pages and other details of the copy in stock, please message us on WhatsApp at 9906523492.
If you want to begin your study of hadith with a small but powerful text, the Arbaeen of Imam Nawawi (RH) is the most familiar place to start, and a clear Urdu sharah is a good companion for it.
Imam Nawawi (RH) lived from 631 to 676 AH and takes his name from Nawa in Syria. He was a scholar of fiqh and hadith who died at about the age of forty-five, yet left behind works that Muslims still study. His collection of forty hadith is known in Arabic as Al-Arbaun an-Nawawiyyah. Although it is called the Forty, scholars note that it actually carries forty-two hadith. He selected narrations that are short enough to memorise, wide enough in meaning to cover the main areas of the religion and, as far as possible, sound in their chain of narration. They reflect the comprehensive speech of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, whose few words carried broad meanings.
The forty hadith in this collection reach into nearly every part of a Muslim’s life. They speak of the importance of sincere intention, of what faith and Islam and ihsan mean, of the pillars of Islam, of avoiding doubtful matters, of good neighbourliness, of controlling the tongue, of honesty in dealings and of kindness to the creation of Allah. Because the text is brief, a reader can finish a hadith in a few minutes and then spend the rest of the day acting on it. A sharah, or commentary, supplies what the short text leaves unsaid: the background, the shades of meaning and the practical guidance that scholars have drawn from the words of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
That is exactly the value of a sharah in Urdu. A reader who finds Arabic commentaries too heavy can still come close to the meaning, and a teacher can use it to prepare short lessons for a class or a Friday gathering.
Read one hadith each day. First read the Arabic text slowly, then read the Urdu explanation, and then write down in a notebook the one lesson you will put into practice. After a week, revise the seven you have studied. If memorisation is your aim, learn a few lines at a time and repeat them in your prayers and in quiet moments. Share what you learn with family members, since teaching is one of the surest ways to remember. Whenever the name of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ comes in the text, send salawat upon him. For questions of fiqh that arise in your own life, consult a qualified scholar.
The collection is brief enough to be completed in forty-odd days of study, which makes it ideal for a Ramadan reading plan or a study circle that meets once a week. A hardback copy stands up well to repeated use in a classroom or on a family shelf.
