Why Iqbal Ka Tasawwur E Tareekh still matters

History is not only a list of dates. For Iqbal it was a living record from which a community can learn about its own strengths and weaknesses. A reader who wants to understand why Iqbal spoke so strongly about self-awareness, effort and renewal will find that his view of history is a key to many of his ideas. Studying it also gives a deeper reading of his poems, because many verses make full sense only when the historical background in his mind is understood.

In Kashmir, where Iqbal’s family roots and his deep love for the land are well known, his writings have long been read with special affection. A book that explains his outlook on the past is therefore a natural addition to any Kashmiri library of Iqbaliyat.

Who should read this book

How to read it with benefit

Read a chapter slowly and keep a collection of Iqbal’s poetry close by, so that you can turn to the verses the author discusses. Note down the questions that arise and discuss them in a study circle with friends or teachers. If you are preparing a paper or a talk, mark the passages that you may wish to cite. Reading a study of Iqbal is most rewarding when it sends you back to Iqbal’s own words.
