How to read a book on Kashmir’s political history

A book on political events is best read alongside other sources. Read this title with a calm and open mind, and note the names, dates and places the author mentions. Keep a notebook and list any claims you wish to check against other books, archives or newspapers. Comparing authors with different viewpoints is the best way to understand a complicated subject. If you are a student, ask your teacher which texts are recommended for your course, because this listing does not state that the book is part of any syllabus or exam. Readers should always treat a book as one voice in a wider conversation, and respect those who see events differently.

A good addition to a Kashmir library

Many families and institutions in Kashmir have started building their own shelves of local writing. A hardback edition lasts longer on the shelf and is a good choice for a school, college or community library. Pair it with Kashmir history, literature and poetry titles from our Kashmir section to give young readers a fuller picture of the Valley, its people and its writers.
